Askar 120 APO: A Premium Astrograph for Every Clear Night
The Askar 120 APO sits in a sweet spot that few telescopes occupy. With 120mm of aperture and a well-corrected triplet APO objective, this scope can chase faint deep sky targets while staying compact for dark site travel. The f/7 focal ratio keeps the optical design manageable and precise, and the optional reducer opens it up to f/5.6 when the situation calls for speed. Whether you are doing astrophotography from your backyard or sketching planetary details from a mountaintop, the 120 APO can rise to almost any challenge.
Askar 120 APO Highlights
Serious Imaging

The Askar 120 APO collects 36% more light than its smaller sibling, the 103 APO. Pair it with the optional field flattener or reducer and a cooled mono camera, and you have a dedicated astrograph that resolves fine structure in galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters with pinpoint accuracy across the full frame. Reducer sold separately
One Scope, Many Targets

At 840mm and f/7, the 120 APO frames mid-size deep sky objects with excellent image scale. Add the 0.8x reducer and it becomes a 672mm f/5.6 wide-field machine. That range covers everything from compact galaxy groups to sprawling emission nebulae in one versatile optical tube.
Visual Experiences

The segmented tube accepts standard 1.25-inch and 2-inch diagonals, eyepieces, and binoviewers with no extra adapters. The apochromatic objective delivers sharp, high-contrast views with true color rendition, making this a genuinely enjoyable telescope to look through. Diagonal and binoveiwers sold separately.

ED Glass and Air-Spaced Triplet Design
At the heart of the Askar 120 APO is a three-element, air-spaced apochromatic objective. One element is extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, engineered to significantly reduce chromatic aberration. Air-spacing the elements rather than cementing them gives the designer more freedom to optimize each surface individually.
The result is sharper star points, cleaner color, and better contrast across the field than a doublet or cemented triplet of similar aperture. A true APO triplet like this delivers the cleanest images and the best views, night after night.

3.3-Inch Focuser Built for Heavy Payloads
The focuser is a full 3.3-inch dual-speed rack-and-pinion unit, CNC machined throughout with a matte black anti-reflective interior to suppress stray light. Ten centimeters of travel give you room to reach focus with virtually any accessory chain, and the 1:10 fine-focus knob delivers the precision needed on demanding nights.
At the rear sits a 360-degree rotator with engraved scales and an enlarged locking screw that holds firm under heavy loads. The M84 rear thread and oversized barrel opening handle everything from a lightweight planetary camera to a full-frame cooled mono setup without vignetting or flexure.

Optional Flattener and Reducer
Askar offers two purpose-built accessories for the 120 APO, each sold separately. The 1x field flattener preserves the native 840mm f/7 focal length while correcting field curvature and coma for flat, sharp stars across a full-frame sensor. The 0.8x reducer brings the system to 672mm at f/5.6, widening the field and cutting exposure times significantly.
Both feature built-in filter threads and ship with M54 and M48 adapters for broad camera compatibility. Whether you image at native focal length or open up with the reducer for large nebula fields, there is a corrector designed for this telescope.

Accessories That Make Setup Easy
Two finder scope bases sit on opposite sides of the focuser barrel, so you can mount a guide scope on one side and a finder on the other. The multi-function handle doubles as a carry grip and a third accessory mounting point via its built-in slot. It also extends 60mm beyond the tube, adding rigidity and clamping area to the rings.
The included 290mm Vixen dovetail plate is longer than standard with extra screw holes for easy balance on most equatorial mounts. A 2-inch and 1.25-inch visual adapter comes installed at the rear, so you can observe right out of the case. A Losmandy-style dovetail is available separately.

Lightweight, Portable, and Field-Ready
The Askar 120 APO weighs just 12.6 lbs (5.7 kg) for the OTA alone and 14.3 lbs (6.5 kg) with rings and dovetail attached. That is light enough for most mid-range equatorial mounts and easy to manage during setup and teardown.
The retractable dew shield keeps packed length to 722mm when contracted and extends to 804mm when deployed. It delays moisture on the front objective and baffles ambient light, improving contrast during both imaging and visual use. The tube is CNC machined aluminum with an anodized finish, and everything packs into the included Oxford cloth carry case for safe transport.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is the Askar 120 APO suitable for full-frame cameras?
Yes. The 3.3-inch focuser with M84 rear thread is designed to fully illuminate a full-frame sensor. Both the optional 1x flattener and the 0.8x reducer also cover full-frame without vignetting, making this a strong choice for photographers using cameras like the ZWO ASI6200 or Sony full-frame mirrorless bodies.
What is the difference between the 1x flattener and the 0.8x reducer?
The 1x flattener keeps the focal ratio at f/7 and corrects field curvature and coma for flat, sharp stars across the entire frame. The 0.8x reducer shortens the focal ratio to f/5.6, which also corrects the field while providing a wider field of view and faster exposure times. The reducer is ideal for large targets and narrowband work where integration speed matters.
Can the Askar 120 APO be used for visual observing?
Absolutely. The telescope accepts standard 1.25-inch and 2-inch diagonals and eyepieces, and the segmented tube allows binoviewer attachment. Beyond protecting the front objective from moisture, the dew shield also blocks stray ambient light. This improves contrast during imaging and visual use.
Does the telescope support electronic auto-focusing?
Yes. The focuser is compatible with ZWO EAF and similar electronic auto-focus motors available as optional accessories. This is particularly useful for unattended imaging sessions and automated meridian-flip workflows.
What mounts are compatible with the Askar 120 APO?
The included 290mm Vixen dovetail plate is compatible with the vast majority of equatorial mounts on the market. A Losmandy D-style dovetail plate is available separately for users with Losmandy-style saddles. At 6.5 kg gross weight, the telescope suits mid-size mounts like the iOptron CEM40 or Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro. For serious long-exposure astrophotography, a heavier mount is best.
Is the dew shield functional or just cosmetic?
It is fully functional. The retractable dew shield extends the tube by 82mm and serves two purposes. It slows dew forming on the front lens by reducing airflow across it, and it blocks stray light outside the field of view. Both functions improve contrast during imaging and visual use.
