About Celestron

Celestron is a renowned telescope company founded in 1964 in Los Angeles, California. Celestron revolutionized the amateur astronomy industry when its founder, Tom Johnson, designed and released the Celestron C8 to the world in 1970. The C8 was a groundbreaking telescope for its time because it featured quality optics at an affordable price.

Tom Johnson was able to achieve this by creating an inexpensive way to mass produce the Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope (SCT). The Celestron C8 quickly became a widely popular telescope. The C8 design is still sold by Celestron today, along with a wide range of other telescopes and optics like binoculars and microscopes.

Celestron is an industry leader in amateur astronomy gear. They manufacture everything from beginner telescopes all the way up to professional, research-grade telescopes for astrophotography. They also make a wide variety of accessories, including telescope mounts, eyepieces, filters, and more.

Hoping to find the best Celestron telescope for your needs and budget? Keep reading below to learn more about the different product lines of Celestron telescopes!

Types of Celestron Telescopes

Celestron makes a wide variety of telescopes, mounts, accessories, and more. Below is an overview of a few of their most popular telescope product lines to help you make a more informed buying decision.

Celestron NexStar SE Telescopes

Celestron NexStar SE Telescopes

The NexStar SE series are some of the best selling telescopes in the world, and for good reason. Equipped with a computerized GoTo mount, these telescopes take the guesswork out of finding objects in the night sky. The NexStar line comes in four sizes, with each model number corresponding to inches of aperture on each telescope: the NexStar 4SE, NexStar 5SE, NexStar 6SE, and the NexStar 8SE.

Each model in the NexStar line has high quality optics and comes with everything you need to get started observing the night sky. For these reasons, they make for an excellent beginner telescope. Though these telescopes can handle some basic imaging (with an additional smartphone adapter) of the Moon and planets, they are not well suited for serious deep sky astrophotography.

Celestron StarSense Explorer Telescopes

Celestron StarSense Explorer Telescopes

The StarSense Explorer line of telescopes is another best seller from Celestron. Using patented technology, the StarSense Explorer line utilizes the power of your smartphone to guide you where to aim the telescope in the night sky. Because this method doesn’t require a computerized mount, the StarSense Explorer telescopes are incredibly affordable for a quality beginner telescope. They are one of our favorite recommendations for a first telescope.

Celestron EdgeHD Telescopes

Celestron EdgeHD Telescopes

The EdgeHD line of telescopes from Celestron are designed with the serious astrophotographer in mind. The name EdgeHD comes from these telescopes’ ability to provide sharp stars from edge to edge on full frame cameras with a large image circle. The EdgeHD telescopes come in four sizes: 8”, 9.25”, 11”, and 14” apertures.

These telescopes are arguably the most versatile telescopes on the market. Featuring a native focal ratio of around f/10, these telescopes make for great planetary imaging with the addition of a Barlow lens. For deep sky imagers, they can also be used at f/7 with an additional reducer/flattener.

These telescopes can even be used at around f/2 for fast, widefield imaging with a third party accessory called the Starizona Hyperstar. On top of all this, they can be used visually with an eyepiece (except for the Hyperstar) for excellent views of the night sky.

Celestron RASA Telescopes

Celestron RASA Telescopes

Designed exclusively for astrophotographers, the RASA is a widefield imaging machine. RASA is short for Rowe Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph, and was designed to have ultra fast optics around f/2 and enough of a flat field for today’s large camera sensors. At f/2, the RASA can collect light 16 times faster than a traditional f/8 telescope. This makes it the perfect choice for astrophotographers looking to gather a lot of signal and still have excellent image quality.

Celestron NexStar Evolution Telescopes

Celestron NexStar Evolution Telescopes

Building off of the success of the NexStar SE line, the NexStar Evolution telescope line adds a number of nice-to-have features. These include integrated WiFi, a built-in battery, and brass worm gears for improved tracking accuracy. The NexStar Evolution telescopes are perfect for beginners or serious visual observers with a bit more budget than the NexStar SE line.
