Askar 151PHQ Review Part I: Unboxing & First Impressions
Agena Astro affiliate Julien Lecomte recently shared this unboxing and first impressions review video:
Askar 151PHQ Review Part II: Optical Test
In the second part of his review, Julien finds that the 151PHQ has an impressive Strehl ratio of 0.97 and almost no chromatic aberration:
Askar 151PHQ Overview
The Askar 151PHQ is a quadruplet astrograph refractor and is the largest member of the PHQ line from Askar. Featuring a 151mm (6") aperture and a 1057mm focal length for an f/7 focal ratio, the 151PHQ is designed to produce stunning flat field images of deep sky objects. With a staggering claimed 60mm image circle, the 151PHQ can handle sensors larger than full frame into medium format territory. Quadruplet Design
The Askar 151PHQ is a quadruplet design, meaning it features a built in field flattener. This saves you money, and also means your scope is equipped for imaging right out of the box. It also means you don't need to worry about precisely calculating back focus unless you're using the Askar 0.7x Reducer (sold separately), in which case you'll need to be at a standard 55mm.
If using it without the additional reducer, you'll have up to 78mm from the base of the rear threads to attach accessories. That means you can easily attach an OAG, filter wheel / drawer, camera, and a rotator for a fully remote-capable setup. The 151PHQ can also be used visually too, so you can take advantage of this truly versatile instrument.
You Decide: f/7 or f/4.9
Using the Askar 0.7x Reducer (sold separately), you can reduce the stock 1057mm f/7 system down to a speedy 740mm f/4.9. This is over a full stop difference, meaning you can gather the same amount of light at f/4.9 in less than half the time than you can at f/7.
Everything You Need for Imaging Out of the Box
No matter what size image train you're working with, the Askar 151PHQ comes with everything you need to get started out of the box. This includes interchangeable M68, M54, and M48 photographic adapters, a finder base for adding a guide scope or other accessories, and a telescoping dew shield. If you don't happen to have a filter drawer or filter wheel, the M48 adapter features a built-in filter drawer for adding your favorite 2" filters.
The 151PHQ also comes standard with a large 3.4" rack & pinion focuser, a 360º rotator, and a multifunctional carry handle with a central slot for attaching accessories with an M6 thread size. This slot may also accommodate 1/4"-20 accessories, which we will confirm at a later date. It also comes with a sturdy 300mm Losmandy D-style dovetail plate and tube rings. All of this comes housed in a sturdy aluminum case for safe transport.
