Important Note About Torn Baader Filter Seals:
Recently, Baader started applying a new filter label on many filters that goes over the edge of the case and also acts as a seal. Unfortunately, these labels rip far too easily during transport, giving the false appearance that the filter case has been previously opened. Many filters we now get from Baader arrive like the ones shown in the photos below, and many others will rip en route from us to you. Rest assured that ALL filters we ship to you are brand new and unopened as received from Baader, whether the seal is intact or partially/completely ripped.

Baader has agreed to revert to their old design of 2-piece labels, but until they use up their current labels, we will continue to have this problem for a while and you might also get a mix of different filter label types. Thank you for your understanding.
- Baader SLOAN-ugriz' Bandpass Filter Set, suitable from f/15 to f/1.8
- SLOAN/SDSS (ugriz’) photometric filters with transmission according to SLOAN-specification
- Manufactured with most advanced ion beam coating technology / Daylight-Proof
- Reflex-Blocker™ hard coated and planeoptically polished – with sealed coating edges (Life-Coat™)
- Blackened edges all around, with filter-lead-side-indicator in the form of a telescope-sided black outer rim
- Equally suitable for modern CMOS cameras as well as for older CCD camera technologies
The next generation: SLOAN filters
In 2000, a new era in photometry began: with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). A 2.5m telescope at Apache Point Observatory (New Mexico, USA) surveyed one third of the sky in five wavelengths. A camera with a total of thirty large CCD sensors with 2048×2048 pixels each was used, each in five rows of six sensors. In front of the sensors was a u'g'r'i'z' filter set for five non-overlapping wavelength windows around 355.1, 468.6, 616.6, 748.0 and 893.2 nm; light pollution such as the airglow at 558nm and the mercury line at 546 nm were masked out. This system was also used for the Pan-STARRS project. The broad data base of these two surveys makes them very well suited for calibrating images. Another advantage are the wider transmission windows, which allow fainter objects to be measured in a shorter time.
Even though the six Sloan filters have a different characteristic than the UBVRI filters, there are now the appropriate algorithms to compare the data with each other or to convert them into each other. Therefore, the Sloan photometry system is gaining more and more importance.
At present, UBVRI filters still dominate in amateur circles, but Baader not only offers unmounted Sloan filters for professional telescopes, but also in the sizes and mounts commonly used by amateurs. In the coming decades, it is expected that the Sloan system will also become more widespread in amateur circles, which is why Baader Planetarium's SLOAN filters are also available in the common filter sizes for amateur telescopes as well as in the large format 100x100 mm.
The SLOAN z' filter is currently not included in the scope of delivery, as its function can usually also be taken over by the UBVRI -I- filter.
The same technology is used for the Sloan filters as for the CMOS-optimized narrowband and LRGB filters. Here, too, the lifetime Life-Coat™ guarantee applies.
The new generation of Baader filters feature:
- Reflex-Blocker™ coatings, for largest ever freedom from halos, even under most adverse conditions concerning aux-optics
- Identical filter thickness to existing standards, with utmost care for parfocality
- Blackened edges all around, with filter-lead-side-indicator in the form of a telescope-sided black outer rim, to additionally eliminate any reflection due to light falling onto the edge of a filter
- Each filter coated individually, with sealed coating edge (NOT cut out of a larger plate with coatings left exposed)
- Life-Coat™: evermore hard coatings to enable a non-aging coating for life – even in a most adverse environment
Specifications
- Filter thickness (without cell): 2mm
- AR Coating: Reflex-Blocker™ hard coated, planeoptically polished
- Special features: CMOS-optimized with Life-Coat™
- Filter mount: 1.25" round mounted in LPFC 6mm cell
Life-Coat™: Limited-Lifetime-Warranty for CMOS-optimized Baader filters
A Baader Planetarium exclusive. Filters incorporating Baader Planetarium’s Life-Coat™ technology are so durable that Baader Planetarium warrants the coatings for the life of the filter. Baader Planetarium has developed Life-Coat™ using materials and processes that result in coatings which will not degrade or fail for a lifetime. Life-Coat™ coatings resist moisture, temperature extremes, and are hardened to withstand normal cleanings.
Baader Planetarium guarantees their Life-Coat™ coatings will not peel, flake or physically degrade and will withstand repeated cleaning with fine optical cleaning equipment. The Limited Lifetime Warranty applies to the original purchaser and does not cover failure from mis-use, physical damage through improper handling, or improper cleaning.
