1. Selecting a 1.25" Reflector Focuser for your Newtonian or Dobsonian Telescope:
GSO now offers two models of 1.25" Crayford focusers for reflector telescopes which are suitable for light-medium visual or light imaging applications. Please take the time to carefully study the available focuser designs, models and base plate sizes to ensure that you buy the correct item for your needs.
Focuser Models
- Single speed focuser # DW156 (This item)
- Coarse focus knob only.
- Cannot be used with ZWO EAF.
- Dual speed focuser, EAF compatible # DW123 (Sold separately)
- Features coarse and fine focus control.
- Compatible with the ZWO EAF out of the box without the need for other 3rd party brackets. Includes a 5mm EAF coupler that works directly with EAF-STD and EAF-5V models (both of which are discontinued). This coupler can also be adjusted to work with the new EAFN and EAF-Pro models which ideally require a 4mm coupler.
2. Telescope Mounting and Focuser Base Plate Choices:
Please note that we are unable to recommend a specific base plate for your telescope - there is no standardization in the industry and we do not have the hole mounting specification for the many scopes on the market. You will therefore need to carefully compare the detailed base plate specifications provided in our descriiption/photos with the tube/focuser specifications on your telescope and make a choice yourself.
GSO's 1.25" focusers can be ordered with one of two base plates for your telescope at no extra charge (see the drop-down list above for available choices). At this time, we offer the following base plate options. The mm specification refers to the diameter of the base curve which shoud closely match your tube's outside diameter (not telescope aperture). Other base plate sizes are not available.
- GSO 125mm base plate # FF294: May be suitable for some 4-5" reflector telescopes. See photos above for detailed base plate specifications. Some key specifications are listed below.
- Base plate curve diameter: 4.93" (125.1mm)
- Base plate dimensions: 2.8" x 2.8" (71mm x 71mm)
- Hole Spacing (center-to-center along telescope tube/optical axis): 57mm (2.25")
- Hole Spacing (center-to-center perpendicular to telescope tube; straight line measurement): 55mm (2.16")
- Hole Spacing (center-to-center perpendicular to telescope tube; measured along curve of base plate): 56mm (2.20")
- Diameter of cutout hole for focuser body: 2.41" (61.1mm)

Besides the base plate details, you must also consider the following:
- Make sure that the hole cut out in your telescope tube is larger than the outside diameter of the focuser drawtube. This is often an issue for telescopes smaller than 8" in aperture or for those with a smaller 1.25" focuser. However, also make sure that the current cutout is not so large that it gets in the way of the screw holes.
- Compare the minimum and maximum heights of the focuser (provided below) with those of your current focuser. This will indicate whether you will be able to reach focus with your eyepieces and accessories, or whether you might need extension tubes. This is not something we will be able to specify for your specific telescope or eyepiece collection.

This high quality, single-speed 1.25" Crayford focuser for reflector telescopes from Guan Sheng Optical (GSO) is a joy to use. You will wonder how you ever lived without it once you install it! It will greatly aid in achieving precise focus for visual observations and astrophotography and you will experience very smooth and precisely controlled focuser motion with zero backlash and zero image shift.
CNC machined from aluminum and anodized black, this focuser comes with a base plate to attach to your reflector telescope (see choices above). The inner drawtube glides on 4 precision bearings and a roller shaft and provides 47mm of focus travel. The inner barrel is baffled and painted a flat black to minimize reflections for maximum contrast.
The focuser also has two large thumbscrews on the underside. The thumbscrew on the telescope side can be used to lock the focuser, allowing the use of heavier accessories or cameras without fear or slippage or losing focus. The other thumbscrew on the eyepiece end can be used to adjust the tension of the focuser to achieve a focusing "feel" that you like. At the easiest (lightest) setting, the focuser moves extremely smoothly. At tighter settings, you can still use heavier accessories without sacrificing much of the smooth focuser action.
4. Focuser Specifications (With Curved Base Plate):
• Minimum focuser height = 3.01" (77mm). Note that in this position, the inner drawtube extends below the curved base plate by about Xmm which may intrude into your scope's light path.

• Please note: Most GSO Crayford focusers have or will soon develop two bearing marks/lines on the upper side of the drawtube. This is caused by wear on the barrel anodizing where is makes contact with the roller bearings. In some focusers, you have to look hard to find these marks. In others, it is very prominent, even for brand new items received from GSO. This does not indicate a defective or used product and is essentially just cosmetic.
• No mounting screws are included with the base plate. You will need to provide your own.
• Not compatible with SCT or refractor telescopes. Also not compatible with any other 2" GSO focuser bodies or base plates.
• The focuser is shipped in a foam-fitted padded box.
• No instruction manual is included.
