Calcium K Solar Observing & Imaging!
Calcium K (Ca-K) telescopes and filters are used to study the Sun at a wavelength of 393.4 nm, one of two emission lines produced by calcium near the edge of the visible spectrum. Ca-K reveals a layer of the solar atmosphere that is slightly lower and cooler than the layer observed in Hydrogen-alpha (H-alpha).Choose the best Calcium K Module for your Telescope Size and Focal Length:
- B600: For telescopes up to 100 mm aperture and 600 mm focal length
- B1200: For telescopes up to 100 mm aperture and 1200 mm focal length
- B1800: For telescopes up to 100 mm aperture and 1800 mm focal length
What Can You See in Calcium K?
The Ca-K emission line highlights supergranulation cells, which appear brightest and strongest in areas with high magnetic activity, including sunspots and active regions. Studying both Calcium K and Hydrogen-alpha can provide important insights into the structure, strength, and depth of solar active regions.
Primarily Designed for Imaging
At 393.4 nm, the Ca-K wavelength sits slightly outside the visible spectrum on the ultraviolet side. While many people can see its violet color, some have difficulty resolving fine contrast due to yellowing of the cornea. People who have undergone cataract surgery may be able to see considerably more detail. For this reason, Calcium K is typically studied with cameras, which can capture the wavelength effectively and reveal impressive levels of solar detail.
Narrow <2.4 Å Bandpass
Lunt Calcium K modules use internal narrowband filters to provide a <2.4 Angstrom bandpass, isolating the Ca-K wavelength for detailed solar imaging. Because Ca-K detail can be difficult for many observers to see visually, these modules are primarily imaging systems.
Telescope Compatibility
Lunt Solar Systems Calcium K modules can be used with most standard nighttime refractors. They can also be paired with Lunt Modular Telescopes when configured for nighttime use.
