Wanderer Astro Snowflake Filter Wheels: Ultra-Low-Profile Without Compromise!
Elevate your astrophotography setup with the Wanderer Astro 8x36 Snowflake Filter Wheel, a precision-engineered solution designed for imaging enthusiasts and professionals alike. Boasting an ultra-low-profile, at just 14mm (0.55in) thick, this advanced filter wheel minimizes backfocus to maximize imaging performance, making the Snowflake filter wheel ideal for telescopes and cameras with tight spacing constraints! With 7 filter slots, an extra slot for the included dark filter, a fully enclosed one-piece filter mask, and robust operation down to −22 °F (−30 °C), the Snowflake delivers reliable, high-accuracy filter positioning night after night. Compatible with a wide range of astrophotography cameras and off-axis guiders, it combines thoughtful engineering with refined aesthetics to help you capture deeper, sharper, more vibrant celestial images!
Notable Features
-
8-slot design for an extra filter or dedicated dark filter slot.
-
Thinner profile for more back space flexibility.
-
High positioning accuracy for consistent and reliable exposures with each filter.
-
Light blocking grooves to prevent light leaks while giving a clean, refined appearance.
-
Smooth performance down to −22 °F (−30 °C).
Ultra-Slim. Ultra-Precise. Built to Perform.
8-Slot Design
The 8-slot design gives you 7 primary filter positions plus a dedicated 8th slot that can be used for an extra unmounted filter or a dark frame filter, letting you capture dark frames at any time without needing to swap hardware mid-session, convenient during long imaging runs!
Ulta-Low Profile
With an impressive 14mm thickness, this 8x36 wheel offers greater flexibility. The Snowflake shines in cases where limited back space is required. Reducing the distance between the filters and the sensor increases effective aperture and decreases vignetting from mounted filters! Spacers are included for further mounting versatility.
Light Leak Protection
The anti-light-leak design uses a fully enclosed body and one-piece filter mask to block stray light from entering the optical path. This helps preserve contrast, prevents gradients, and ensures cleaner, more consistent data, especially critical during long-exposure astrophotography.
7+1 Eight-slot Design
The 8th slot is engineered to accept either an additional unmounted filter or the included dedicated dark filter, enabling seamless dark-frame acquisition without changing your imaging train. This design allows users to capture calibration frames on demand, at any time and in any environment, improving workflow efficiency while maintaining precise filter alignment and system integrity during extended imaging sessions. Supported filters are 36mm unmounted. Please note: the extra 8th slot does not support 2" filters and filters thinner than 2.5mm require additional shims (not included)
Thinner for More Possibilites
The impressive 14mm thickness offers astrophotographers greater flexibility. In situations with limited back focus or focus travel, or if you need to install a CAA/ETA, the Snowflake filter wheel may be your best option! Additionally, the reduced distance between the filters and the sensor increases the effective aperture of the filters, helping to minimize vignetting.
The Snowflake comes standard with back focus spacers, allowing users to increase the thickness up to 20mm to accommodate conventional back focus solutions. For the 14mm model, three 2 mm spacers are included.
High Positioning Accuracy
The Snowflake filter wheel uses a gear-driven system combined with a damping anti-backlash mechanism. Paired with high-precision sensors, it achieves remarkable repeatability, ensuring long-term consistency for flat frames.
Fully Enclosed Design
No exposed motors or circuit boards, offering a uniquely refined aesthetic. The innovative one-piece filter mask not only offers a seamless, premium appearance but also prevents stray light from entering through the filter sides or any openings. Moreover, the one-piece mask requires only half the number of screws to securely hold the filters, simplifying installation. This design also prevents accidental screw drops into the filter wheel gaps or onto the camera.
Traditional Filter Masks Included
The filter mask lets you use smaller filters while preventing vignetting, keep filters stable during rotation, and ensure proper alignment with the optical path. This allows you to expand your filter options without compromising image quality or the smooth operation of your filter wheel.
Light-Leak Protection: Groove & Foam Design
The light-leak groove and blocking foam work together to ensure a fully sealed optical path. The precision-machined groove guides the filter into place while the high-density foam creates a snug barrier around the edges, preventing stray light from entering the filter wheel. This combination preserves image contrast, eliminates unwanted gradients, and ensures cleaner, more reliable data during long-exposure astrophotography sessions.
Easier Camera Connection
The specially designed 8th filter slot features a unique shape that allows screws to pass directly through the filter disk and attach to the camera. This eliminates the need to disassemble the filter disk when connecting filter wheel to your camera, greatly simplifying the process and avoiding potential mishaps.
Exceptional Rigidity
Unlike most filter wheels, which only have fixing screws around the perimeter, the Snowflake filter wheel includes a central mounting screw, creating a more rigid, unified structure. Under the same conditions, deformation is reduced by half compared to conventional designs, effectively doubling rigidity.
Compatible with Major Brands
The Snowflake filter wheel features versatile and compatible mounting holes, supporting ZWO, QHY, ToupTek, as well as PlayerOne APS-C and full-frame cameras, and most of their OAGs. It also includes a recessed groove specifically designed to accommodate QHYCCD cameras without increasing the back focus.
Extreme Cold Tolerance
The powerful motor and the zero-flex design allow the Snowflake filter wheel to operate smoothly even in winter conditions (-30℃). The motor requires a 12V supply, and we thoughtfully provide a 12V hub output to simplify wiring.
ASCOM and INDI Compatible
Supports simultaneous connection and individual identification of multiple Snowflake filter wheels via ASCOM drivers.
