ZWO ASI385MC-COOL Astronomy Camera for Solar-System and Deep-Sky Imaging

The ZWO ASI385MC-Cool color astronomy camera is built around Sony’s high-sensitivity IMX385LQR CMOS sensor. With a resolution of 2.13 megapixels, this one-shot TEC-cooled color camera is ideal for capturing images of planets, the Moon and Sun. The reduced amp glow of this camera also makes it ideal for capturing images of smaller deep-sky objects and for electronically-assisted astronomy (EAA) applications.

The ASI385MC-Cool has twice the sensitivity of the ZWO ASI185MC camera. It also has a larger sensor than the ZWO ASI224MC camera, which means it can image a wider field of view for a given focal length, but it retains the same small 3.75-micron pixel size for high resolution.  The 7.3mm x 4.1mm sensor (1/1.9”) has a resolution of 1936x1096, a read noise of 0.7e and a full well capacity of 18,700e to allow imaging of a wide range of celestial objects with low noise and minimal pixel saturation.

The TEC cooling system brings the sensor temperature down to 40-45oC below ambient to keep sensor noise as low as possible, even on warm nights. This is especially important when trying to capture images of deep-sky objects using longer exposure times. The camera’s TEC cooler requires 12V@3A provided with an external power supply (not included).

The ASI385MC-Cool uses a USB3.0 port for fast data transfer, a critical feature for getting sharp images of fast-rotating planets. At full 1936x1096 resolution, the camera captures data as fast as 120fps (in 10-bit ADC high speed mode) or 67fps (in 12-bit ADC normal mode). It also incorporates a USB2.0 hub for powering accessories such as a guide camera and electronic focuser.

The ZWO ASI385MC-Cool camera comes with an AR-coated window to protect the sensor. It also includes a USB3.0 cable, USB2.0 cables, 1.25” cover, 1.25” nosepiece, and a quick-start guide. The camera weighs just 420g (14.8oz) and has a diameter of 78mm.

This camera can be configured with the following connections for attachment to telescopes and imaging accessories:
